[the ohio state university - history and facts]

Just north of the Short North and downtown, sits the Ohio State University’s beautiful campus, a retail strip and housing that has, until recently, catered primarily to the student population. Over the last few years, this area has undergone some massive changes that have benefited the student population, while giving residents from neighborhoods south (Short North, Arena District, Victorian Village, Harrison West) a reason to visit the campus area.

[that was then]

For a long time, OSU’s campus area was the typical row of record stores, bookstores, fast-food restaurants and, of course, coffee shops, with the Newport Music Hall as the main entertainment venue. For a visitor to the area, to look around, it would was apparent that students lived there.

Things changed in 2002 when Campus Partners for Community Urban Redevelopment- an organization developed in 1995, in cooperation with the city, to revitalization the University District- broke ground on the South Campus Gateway project.

Existing buildings were demolished and construction began on the Gateway Center, which was finally completed in 2005.

[this is now]

South Campus Gateway is described as, “a dynamic blend of urban retail, entertainment, office space, rental housing and parking to serve one of the nation's largest collegiate markets.”

The goal of Campus Partners is to, “better serve the market of students and other residents and to energize the whole High Street corridor in the campus area.” As one of the largest urban redevelopment projects ever undertaken in central Ohio, Campus Partners have set the bar high and paved the way for other universities.

The Drexel Gateway Theater , with eight screens, offers a variety of entertainment from mainstream, blockbuster movies to independent films, student films, and special events and speakers.

Also in the area are more than 30 new entertainment, restaurant and shopping venues, 88,000 square feet of additional office space and 190 new studio, loft-style and one- and two-bedroom apartments.

Campus Partners is quick to point out that South Campus Gateway is not a mall, but “a distinct collection of one-of-a-kind local businesses side-by-side with familiar national stores in a pedestrian friendly environment on Columbus’ ‘Main Street.’”

[what’s new]

South Campus Gateway is still pretty new and more businesses are planning to move in, including Sunflower Market, a natural foods grocery store and affordable alternative to Trader Joe’s or Whole Foods Market, both of which are inconveniently located for campus residents, especially those without cars.
