the concrete jungle (gym)
[how does the city affect
your workout?]
There are a few things to think about when jogging,
biking, walking or even skating along city sidewalks as part of
your daily exercise routine. First things first…you’re not
invincible! Check the ozone alerts in the morning. Check UV
levels while you’re at it. Take in to consideration your route
to cut down on the consumption of exhaust and fumes from
vehicles—especially during rush hour—consider the impact running
on concrete might have on your body and dress accordingly.
[ozone alerts…is there anything to it?]
- In Kansas City, the Kansas City Area
Transportation Authority (KCATA) lowers bus fare to
25 cents a ride when the Ozone Alert is high.
- Ozone at ground level can affect even the most
fit person, making it harder to breath by reducing
lung capacity.
- If you are stubborn or driven by routine, at
least work out early in the morning or late in the
evening to avoid high ozone levels and exhaust from
heavy traffic.
[UV rays...but the sun gives us vitamin D, it’s a good
thing…right?] The mantra is moderation…everything in moderation.
The warm sun feels good on your face as you power walk through
the park, and it’s nice to get that sun-kissed look. It’s a
different story when you realize you’ve been sun-slapped.
Aside from the short term pain of a sun burn,
complete with blisters and peeling, long term
affects include skin cancer and eye damage such as
cataracts. Don’t be lazy, wear sunglasses and
sunscreen… and a hat for good measure. What’s the point of working out to look good if
you are going to let the sun age you by 10 years?
[all about the surface…can the terrain impact my
jogging routine that much?] It’s great to get your heart rate up, get the
body moving and get in shape. But jogging on the wrong surface
can have adverse affects. You may think you are getting in shape
but you could be destroying your knees, which will bring those
dreams of participating in the
Columbus Marathon
to a screeching halt.
- Running on grass and dirt trails provides the
best surface for shock absorption, but sometimes the
unevenness can be unwieldy, or if it rains, muddy,
wet conditions can hamper you.
- Running means slamming your feet against a
surface repeatedly. Paved roads aren’t so great for
shock absorption so switch it up to prevent foot or
knee injury.
[breathe!...what’s the best fabric to wear when working
out in hot weather?]
- Good old cotton will absorb sweat
- Look for sweat-wicking fabric that moves
sweat from your skin to the outside of the
fabric keeping you cooler
- While mesh jerseys or tank tops might seem
like the smart thing to do, they expose you to
the sun. If you do wear a tank top wear plenty
of sun block
- Wear a hat to keep your head cool and a wet
bandana to keep your neck cool. This will make a
huge difference when working out.
