short north urban croquet
[an aristocratic pastime
goes urban] If you revel in the chaos of the Doo Dah Parade
every July 4, and appreciate the exuberance created by the
DisOrganizers, mark October on your calendar…they’re back! The annual Short North Urban Croquet tournament
will take place in Goodale Park. Deb Roberts (a.k.a.
Mz. Doo Dah) says the tradition started years ago.
“The game started in a gravel lot across from the
Short North Tavern. I didn’t get to see that one,
but from people’s account, it was really a hoot,”
she says. Eventually the game moved to the more spacious
Goodale Park and Deb says she was told she had to
get involved. “Someone said to me, ‘Deb, you need to
plan this,’” she says. “I don’t know anything about
croquet, but I said okay.”
Maybe Deb didn’t know
much about croquet at the time, but she does know about
planning. “We had a really good turn out. Everybody was wearing
their whites,” she says. “For years it kept going. It moved
around a couple more times and finally ended up back in Goodale
Park.” The tournament is open to anybody. And a trophy goes to the
winners. “There is fabulous trophy. It’s a mallets and balls
standing straight up topped by a fluorescent bird house. It says
Doo Dah Croquet on it. It’s about 7 years old,” Deb says.
The unique trophy gets passed on
each year to the new champions. Deb admits it has
probably seen better days, and might need to be
updated soon. Last year, on October 3, Here For
Beer took the trophy, knocking out, longtime winners
Croq-au-vin.
The next round of Short North Urban
Croquet is being planned for October again. The
web site suggests, “A new awesome location in
being groomed for our new locale! Check back for
more of the continuing saga of Short North Urban
Croquet!” Croquet has evolved over the years
taking on many variations. To learn a little bit
