clintonville's farmers' market
down on the [urban] farm

Clintonville resurrects an important tradition with its annual farmers’ market

“When tillage begins, other arts follow. The farmers, therefore, are the founders of human civilization.”

~Daniel Webster, American lawyer and statesman

Before the general store, when America was considered predominantly rural, it wasn’t uncommon for people to purchase their meat, dairy or produce directly from the growers and producers. With the growth of the urban and suburban areas, direct contact with these producers was a thing of the past and grocery stores became the middle man.Farmers Market Booth

There is no substitute for a homegrown tomato, seasonal fruit and fresh herbs. While most grocery stores carry these things year round, they aren’t always guaranteed organic, fresh or flavorful.

Four years ago, Clintonville decided to bring back that direct contact between buyer and grower with a farmers’ market. Today, Clintonville and the surrounding areas such as The Ohio State University campus residents now have the best produce and homemade goods at their fingertips. On May 20, Clintonville celebrated spring with the kickoff of the 4th annual Clintonville Farmers’ Market, which runs through October 28.

Twelve farms from all over Ohio are represented each Saturday on N. High Street where they sell their wares from 9 a.m. to noon. Shoppers can find everything from fresh spinach, onions, asparagus and rhubarb, to honey products, organically-raised beef and chicken and beautiful flowers to bring a little spring into the home. You can either take home baked goods made using these fresh products, or pick up a copy of the Clintonville Farmers’ Market 2005 Cookbook and try your hand at making Sunshine Dill Pickles from cucumbers or zucchini cake if you have a sweet tooth.

The Clintonville Farmers’ Market is more than a place to buy fresh produce, it is a community experience. Music from local musicians floats through the air while residents come out to enjoy the weather, socialize with their neighbors and meet people from surrounding neighborhoods. Every third Saturday, or “Market Day,” area shops get in on the fun. They set up stalls and feature handcrafted and special products.

Farmers Market Flowers   Each Saturday is an educational experience and a great way to get the community involved with the market while supporting their local growers. Throughout the season, special events are planned for each market day. May 27 will feature a tribute to Memorial Day. Other Saturdays will feature chefs, a tractor display, a basket maker, and educational displays and demos using locally grown foods.

In 2005, the Clintonville Farmers’ Market had their first Farm Visit Day including a hayride, fishing, and a fresh, barbecued chicken meal. Other past events have included vintage tractor displays, cooking demonstrations, wine making, ice cream making demonstrations, and flower arranging and corn husking contests.

As spring changes to summer and summer turns into fall, the featured seasonal produce will change. Get out the cookbook and join your neighbors at the Clintonville Farmers’ Market to stock up for spring picnics, summer cookouts and autumn celebrations.
