[that was then]
Considered a suburb in 1862, Italian Village was the first
neighborhood of its kind to be annexed to the city of Columbus.
Like the other urban neighborhoods in Columbus, the historic
Italian Village area fell into disrepair post World War II.
Despite the condition of the neighborhood, many residents and
property owners felt a sense of community. In the 1970s, these
residents decided to combat the demolition of historic buildings
and the deterioration of the area by forming the
Italian Village Society. Soon after, the Columbus City
Council formed the
Italian Village Commission.
By 1986, the Short North
Area (Italian Village,
Victorian Village and the High Street Commercial District)
was awarded an "All American City" designation, for its
public-private partnership in the revival of the area.
[this is now]
Eighty-percent of this residential area includes single family
homes, double family homes and row houses. The surviving,
renovated buildings (both brick and frame) reflect the
predominant Queen Anne and Italianate styles popular when the
neighborhood was developed in the 19th century. This,
along with tree-line streets, gabled roofs, decorative cornices
and a nearby park, makes Italian Village a great place to live.
A tranquil area, Italian Village is a good fit for anyone from
single people to families. And for those looking for a little
more excitement, the Short
North and downtown
Columbus are a short walk away.
Several sections of Italian Village were recently listed on the
National Register of Historic Places with more sections being
considered.
