[that was then]

The Hilltop was originally known as Sullivant's Hill and was donated to the city of Columbus by the Sullivant family who had originally settled there.

The name Hilltop comes from the topography of the land. The community is situated on top of a hill formed during the Glacial Period. The first people to inhabit the area were mound building Indians and their remains have been found on and around Hilltop.

At the beginning of the 19th century, more inhabitants came to Hilltop once a major roadway, the National Road (now Route 40) was built for easier access to the area.

The area served as one of two prison camps for Confederate soldiers in Ohio during the Civil War. By the early to mid 20th century, more families began moving in and the area grew.

Enjoying a strong Quaker heritage early on, Hilltop was considered a quiet, simple neighborhood, perfect for families.

[this is now]

The Hilltop is home to a very large Latino population. Although the neighborhood is considered one of the rougher areas of the city, Hilltop residents maintain a very close knit relationship with one another and promote community pride.

The community has redeveloped commercial property, created the Hilltop Senior Village and developed several recreation trails and parks in the area.

Homes contain large front porches situated on tree-lined streets. According to the Greater Hilltop Community Development Corporation, the neighborhood design unites residents. “Neighborhood block parties and local parades are bringing neighbors together. The close proximity of local shopping, easy access to bus lines and the short distance from downtown has contributed to the Hilltop’s success. Home values are rising and community infrastructure is improving and expanding.”

There are 14 parks and recreation areas in and around the Hilltop neighborhood. The GHCDC joined with city employees to plant evergreen trees and make sure Dry Run Creek at Holton Park had an easily accessible hiking trail.
[tradition]

The Women of Character award is a long standing tradition in Hilltop. The fall parade, sponsored by the Hilltop Business Association, serves as the announcement of the Women of Character nominees. Award winners are selected by the GHCDC from community wide submissions. A luncheon honors the women for their concern and interest in the Hilltop community.

[what’s new]

In 2005, Hilltop started a new tradition with a four week summer concert series called Music on the Hill. The musicians reflected the diverse Hilltop population with everything from jazz and country to Latin and gospel bands.
