[that was then]
The Harrison West foundation was laid in the late 19th
century when the area was just farmland. Brick houses were
constructed for area workers along brick streets. In the 1970s
Harrison West residents joined Short North and Victorian Village
residents in dealing with a declining neighborhood. It was at
this time that residents united to form the
Harrison West Society, “to
preserve and improve the neighborhood and broaden the
appreciation of ethnic and social heritage with friendly
contact.” The society was successful and today Harrison West is
a charming place to live.
[this is now]
Residents of Harrison West can easily walk to the
Short
North, Victorian Village, along the Olentangy River
and to Goodale Park to enjoy the many festivals held there
through out the year.
Grandview Heights is only a 3
minute drive.
The Harrison West Society maintains a sense of community pride
and continues to improve the neighborhood through planting
trees, organizing public art projects, sponsoring zoning changes
to protect residential areas and strengthen commercial strips,
arranging for better alley and street lighting and hosting
community social events.
Several years ago, the
century-old AC Humko factory was demolished and a 16-acre
residential development, Harrison Park, was built to
include single family homes, condominiums, lofts and apartments
with a design that blended with the area’s dominant Victorian
architecture.
