[grandview heights - history and facts]
Technically a suburb, this charming area is only a five minutes
from downtown Columbus by car. Officially a city, Grandview
Heights is predominantly residential with a downtown area that
draws visitors from all over making it feel like a busy urban
arts district. This breathtaking old storefront neighborhood
contains an art house theatre that shows independent and foreign
films, coffee houses, galleries, boutiques and upscale bistros.

[that was then]
Grandview Heights was originally part of
Marble
Cliff, one of the first suburbs of
Columbus, which settled as a
community in 1890. Grandview Heights became a separate village
in 1906 and a city in 1931. Together with the village of Marble
Cliff and the city of Upper Arlington, the area constitutes the
Tri-Village Community.
[this is now]
Grandview Height’s close proximity to downtown Columbus, the
Short North and
Victorian Village makes it an ideal place for those
looking for a bit of privacy with quick, convenient access to
the city. However, residents of Grandview Heights don’t have to
leave the area to enjoy a great movie at the exquisitely
restored 1930s
Drexel Theatre, fine dining,
excellent shopping and captivating exhibits.
Grandview Heights maintains its own police and fire departments
and an independent school district.
The area is unique in that it staved off the effects of the
suburban exodus that adversely impacted so many other
neighborhoods close to downtown. According to the Grandview
Heights Marble Cliff Historical Society, “After Grandview became
a city in 1931, it did not lose its small town charm. It
remained the same in many ways. There is still a close-knit
feeling and neighborliness among the people. Few neighborhoods
in a city have remained so delightfully unspoiled for nearly a
century.”
[tradition]
Started in 1993, The
Tour de Grandview International Cycling
Classic has grown into the
premier cycling event in central Ohio. The annual event features
world-class professional athletes, many of whom have competed in
National finals and at the Olympics. The Tour offers a women's
prize purse on par with the men's, a rarity in the cycling
world.
The race weekend attracts spectators from Central Ohio and
beyond, with the Criterium race as the favorite event, due to
its sharp turns, steep inclines, and grueling demands.
Planned by the Grandview Community Association, the tour’s goal
is to “promote healthy, active lifestyles and an environmentally
conscious community.”
